Shaping the Future: The UX of Near Field Communication

NOTE: This is the draft of my entry for a lightning talk at UX Lisbon 2013. Let me know what you  think of it.

The information age took us by storm and the mobile revolution is still in full effect – yet we already stand on the brink of the next paradigm shift: the seamless connection of information and personal devices.

Much of this involves a technology called Near Field Communication, NFC in short. NFC is based on paper-thin adhesive chips that can hold tiny bits of information. These can be stuck wherever their use is appropriate and read by NFC devices, mobile Phones being one important part of them. More and more mobile phones come with the capability to read and also write NFC chips.

NFC is usually only mentioned in connection with payment systems. Its range of possible use though is breathtaking and sadly too often neglected.

This talk offers a brief introduction to the principle of how NFC works and focuses on the amazing possibilities of NFC in everyday use and how NFC can enrich our experiences with technology by showing actual and (once) futuristic use cases and how this relates to our profession of User Experience Design.

  1. Hi Memi,
    Great topic you’re submitting!
I submitted a lightning talk too and it’s really hard to make it sexy and catchy.
Maybe you should take out this part: “NFC is usually only mentioned in connection with payment systems. Its range of possible use though is breathtaking and sadly too often neglected.”
Too long and not relevant for your talk.
The first paragraph is great. Catchy!
The second one is too descriptive, too much details and the interesting part (the last paragraph) comes at the end, which is pretty sad because that’s the real purpose of the talk.
Maybe you should focus more on the idea of how NFC is gonna change the way UX designers work and think a global connected ecosystem.

    1. Thanks very much and I totally agree!
I think the main part being the last one is troubling the most, also the descriptiveness.
I wish we could submit a video!

  2. For what it’s worth, here’s a hopefully much more engaging version.

The information age took us by storm and the mobile revolution is still in full effect – yet we already stand on the brink of the next paradigm shift: the seamless connection of information and personal devices.

Imagine a world where you have the possibility of giving your devices context by simply holding them close to a tiny chip. Things like sharing your WiFi credentials or telling your mobile phone that you are going to bed and it should mute and dim itself and also set the alarm clock to 7am. All with one simple touch — Welcome to the world of Near Field Communication.

This talk focuses on the amazing possibilities of NFC in everyday use. A variety of actual and (once) futuristic use cases will illustrate how NFC can enrich our experiences with technology and how this relates to our profession of User Experience Design.
